Why steel trading differs from city to city

A trader near a mill cluster, such as the sponge iron plants and rolling mills in Raipur's Urla and Siltara industrial areas or the re-rolling mills of Mandi Gobindgarh, buys close to the source. One purchase order often arrives in several part-shipments, and the weight that reaches the yard rarely matches the weight ordered. A stockist in a large consuming city sells more out of the yard: many smaller orders, cut lengths and loose pieces, several lorries a day, and often more than one warehouse. The product mix changes from market to market too (coils and sheets in one, TMT, structurals and pipes in another), and so does the unit on the bill: kilogram, metre or piece.
