Freight is changing. The eastern dedicated freight corridor that runs from Ludhiana ends at Sonnagar in Bihar, and the corridor operator expects finished steel among the freight on the onward section. The Ganga is a working waterway again: container cargo reached Patna's Gaighat terminal from Kolkata in 2018, and the Kalughat terminal in Saran district was handed to a private operator in November 2025. Kolkata and Haldia remain the ports. For a trader the job is to deliver to sites lorry by lorry, and to bill on what each lorry actually carried.
