Most of the city's wholesale steel changes hands on the Howrah side of the Hooghly, in the Loha Bazar along Belilious Road near Tikiapara station, and among the iron and steel dealers of Burrabazar. A typical Howrah counter stocks TMT bars next to angles, channels, joists, plates, flats, pipes, GP sheets and colour-coated roofing sheets. TMT usually goes out in 12-metre lengths.
Much of the long-product supply is rolled within the state. SAIL's Durgapur Steel Plant, about 158 km from Kolkata, makes merchant products and structurals. SAIL's IISCO Steel Plant at Burnpur, Asansol, makes TMT rods, wire and coil, angles, channels and I-sections. Imported iron and steel comes in through Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, India's only riverine major port, which runs the Kolkata Dock System and the Haldia Dock Complex.
That product mix is hard to run on accounting software. One counter sells TMT by the tonne, channels by the piece and pipe by the metre, and a mill order often reaches the godown in several lorries. Stock by Godown
Stock is held per warehouse, and each user sees only the godowns assigned to them. Transfers between warehouses and a low-stock report are included.
