How each line is measured — and why that decides your software
Steel is not one product. What separates these lines is the unit the trade actually happens in, and that is precisely where general accounting software starts to hurt: it wants one unit per item, while a steel yard buys in one and sells in another.
Coil is an identity, not a quantity
A coil has a number and a weight of its own, and no two weigh the same. Holding "40 tonnes of HR" as a single figure loses the thing that matters, so coils are tracked one by one and allocated to orders individually.
Sheet and plate move between weight and piece
Bought by weight, often sold by the piece. The conversion has to be automatic and consistent, or the stock figure and the billed figure drift apart.
Pipe is sold three different ways
By kilogram, by metre or by piece, sometimes to the same customer in the same week, across several brands and classes. Each needs the right sectional weight behind it.
Structural is sectional weight arithmetic
Angle, channel, beam, flat and round bill on standard sectional weights. Getting ISMB and ISMC weights right is the whole job — our free weight charts use the same figures the software does.
TMT is brand, grade and size
Sold per tonne, billed on the weight actually loaded, and a customer who wants one mill's Fe 500D will not accept another's. Brand is part of the item, not a note.
All of it bills on actual weight
Whatever the line, the order carries the ordered weight and the weight actually loaded, and the challan uses the actual figure. That single rule is why steel traders outgrow general accounting software.
Common questions
Can one order mix coil, pipe and structural?
Yes. An order holds whatever lines you put on it, and each line carries its own unit, its own HSN code and its own ordered and actual weight.
We sell pipe by piece but buy it by weight. Does that work?
Yes. Delivery sub-orders are counted in kilograms, metres or pieces, and SteelERP converts to tonnage using the sectional weight, so you can purchase on one unit and sell on another.
How are TMT brands handled?
Brand, grade and size are set up as products in the catalogue with their own HSN codes, so a particular mill's Fe 500D in 12 mm is its own item with its own stock and price.
What if we trade something not listed here?
The catalogue is yours to define — GP and colour-coated, fencing, and other lines are set up the same way. Ask about your mix and we will tell you plainly whether it fits.
