ISMB, ISMC & ISA Weight Chart in kg/m (IS 808)

Nominal weight per metre for every ISMB beam, ISMC channel and main-list ISA equal angle in IS 808:2021, the current Bureau of Indian Standards table for hot rolled sections. Each row sits next to the IS 808:1989 figure so you can see where older charts differ. Use the calculator to turn pieces and lengths into kilograms before you quote.

Where these numbers come from

Standard: IS 808:2021, Hot Rolled Steel Beam, Column, Channel and Angle Sections — Dimensions and Properties (fourth revision). Every mass is copied from its tables and checked against IS 808:1989 (Edition 4.1, incorporating Amendment No. 1), the edition most printed charts still follow.

Formula: kg/m = sectional area (cm²) × 0.785, because IS 1852:1985 (clause 3.1) calculates nominal weight with steel at 7.85 g/cm³. We re-derived every row from its printed area this way. For a load: weight (kg) = kg/m × length (m) × pieces.

Tolerance: actual mill weights vary within the IS 1852 tolerance: ±2.5% per metre for beams and channels, +5% / −3% for angles over 3 mm thick. Bill the weighed weight, not the chart weight.

Pick a section, enter the length of each piece and how many pieces. The result uses the IS 808:2021 kg/m figure from the tables below and shows the range the load can weigh within IS 1852 tolerance.

ISMB beam weight chart (kg/m)

ISMB is the Indian Standard medium weight beam, a sloping-flange I-section; the number is the depth in mm. D is depth, B flange width, t web thickness and T mean flange thickness.

ISMC channel weight chart (kg/m)

ISMC is the Indian Standard medium weight channel with sloping flanges. For these sizes, the masses and dimensions are identical in IS 808:1989 and IS 808:2021.

Heavier ISMC variants

IS 808 also lists a heavier version of several channel sizes with a thicker web and a slightly wider flange. It marks them with an asterisk; IS 808:1989 notes they are intended for the wagon industry and are rolled on the same rolls as the lighter section. If an order just says “ISMC 250”, it means the standard section in the table above.

* For the heavy ISMC 175 (7.5 mm web), both editions print 22.7 kg/m, but the printed sectional area (27.3 cm² in 2021) works out to 21.4 kg/m at 7.85 g/cm³. Every other row matches its area to within about 1%. We show the printed figure; confirm this section’s weight with the mill before billing on it.

Many online channel charts show 6.8 kg/m for ISMC 75, 9.2 for ISMC 100, 12.7 for ISMC 125 and 16.4 for ISMC 150, with thinner webs (4.4 mm on ISMC 75). Those profiles are not the ones in IS 808:1989 or IS 808:2021, which both give 7.14, 9.56, 13.1 and 16.8 kg/m with a 4.8 mm web on ISMC 75. At least one section database files the lighter profile under IS SP 6(1).

ISA equal angle weight chart (kg/m)

ISA equal angles are written leg × leg × thickness in mm, so ISA 50×50×6 has two 50 mm legs, 6 mm thick. This is the full main list of equal angles in IS 808:2021 (Table 9); the supplementary list is not included.

Amber 1989 figures differ from 2021 by more than rounding. IS 808:2021 prints angle masses to two decimals, and most are slightly higher than the 1989 figures: up to about 6% on the smallest angles (ISA 25×25×4 is 1.48 kg/m against 1.4), and under 2% for 60 mm legs and above. On the smallest sizes, that gap is larger than the IS 1852 tolerance, so check which edition your supplier’s chart uses.

IS 808:1989 or IS 808:2021 — which one to use?

IS 808:2021 is the fourth revision and replaces IS 808:1989. According to its foreword, the 2021 revision merges in the parallel-flange sections of IS 12778:2004, aligns the section axes with IS 800 and adds plastic and torsional section properties. The ISMB, ISMC and ISA designations carry over unchanged.

This page uses the 2021 figures. If a supplier’s chart or a mill test certificate uses the 1989 value, the gap is small, but on a large consignment it adds up. Agree the basis before you price, and invoice on weighed weight.

Chart weight vs actual weight in your billing

The chart gives you a nominal weight to quote from; what leaves the yard is weighed. SteelERP keeps both on every order line (the ordered weight and the actual loaded weight) and bills on the actual, with delivery sub-orders by kg, metre or piece, each with its own challan.

ISMB, ISMC & ISA weight — FAQs

What is the weight of ISMB 200 per metre?

IS 808:2021 gives 24.17 kg/m for ISMB 200 (200 mm deep, 100 mm flange). IS 808:1989 printed it as 24.2 kg/m. A 6 m piece therefore weighs about 145.02 kg.

What is the weight of ISMC 100 per metre?

9.56 kg/m, the same in IS 808:1989 and IS 808:2021 (100 mm deep, 50 mm flange, 5.0 mm web). Charts that show 9.2 kg/m list a thinner 4.7 mm web, which is not the IS 808 profile.

How do I calculate the weight of a beam, channel or angle?

Multiply the kg/m figure by the length in metres and by the number of pieces. For example, 20 pieces of ISA 50×50×6 at 6 m each weigh 4.49 × 6 × 20 = 538.8 kg. The kg/m figures themselves are the sectional area multiplied by 7.85 g/cm³, the steel density IS 1852 uses for nominal weight.

How much can the actual weight differ from the chart?

IS 1852:1985 allows the weight per metre to vary by ±2.5% for beams and channels (±4% for the old Fe 310-0 grade of IS 1977), ±5% for angles 3 mm thick and +5% / −3% for angles thicker than 3 mm. A 6 m ISMB 300 piece with a nominal weight of 276.12 kg can therefore weigh roughly 269.2 kg to 283.0 kg and still be within tolerance.

Why do different weight charts give different numbers?

Some charts still print IS 808:1989 figures, which differ from IS 808:2021 for a few sizes (ISMB 600 is 123 kg/m in 1989 and 121.00 kg/m in 2021). Others list channel and beam profiles with different web and flange thicknesses from the ones in IS 808. Ask your supplier which edition their chart follows.

Figures are nominal values from the standards, for estimating and quoting. They are not a substitute for weighing, and structural design should use the full section properties in IS 808. Page last checked: 11 September 2026.
