How Mumbai's steel market is laid out
The Kalamboli market yard covers about 302 hectares in roughly 1,940 plots. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is its governing body, and the MMR Iron & Steel Market Committee runs its day-to-day affairs. Mills in the region include JSW Steel's Dolvi Works in Raigad district, a 10 MTPA coastal plant making hot rolled and cold rolled steel and TMT bars, with expansion towards 15 MTPA under way. JSW's Vasind and Tarapur plants in Maharashtra make galvanised and colour-coated steel.
Kalamboli sits where the Sion-Panvel Highway, NH 48, NH 66 and the Mumbai-Pune Expressway meet, about 21 km from JNPT port. Dolvi lists heavy fabrication, machinery, structures and infrastructure among the uses of its steel, and the region has a run of large projects: the Coastal Road, Atal Setu (the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link), Metro Line 3 and Navi Mumbai International Airport.
