The short answer
If you need to raise GST invoices, generate e-invoices and e-way bills, keep your books and file returns from one package, Marg ERP covers that, and SteelERP does not. SteelERP does not generate e-invoice IRNs or e-way bills, and it does not keep a full accounting ledger. For accounts it has a two-way link with Tally Prime.
If your pain is on the yard and dispatch side, SteelERP was built for that. Ordered weight vs actual loaded weight, one order leaving in several trucks, a challan for each, stock split across yards, coils you need to trace. A general billing package can be configured for some of this. SteelERP has it as the core workflow.
Where Marg ERP is stronger
Marg ERP has been around since 1992, and it says it is used by more than 10 lakh businesses through 850+ sales and support centres.[1] Based on its own published material, it is clearly ahead of SteelERP in these areas:
- Full accounting. Marg describes its accounting module as covering everything “from billing to balance sheet”, with bank reconciliation and outstanding reports.[1][3] SteelERP has no general ledger.
- GST e-invoicing. Marg generates e-invoices without visiting the portal and prints the QR code and IRN on the invoice.[4] SteelERP does not generate e-invoices.
- E-way bills. Marg generates single or bulk e-way bills and uploads them as JSON.[4][5] SteelERP does not generate e-way bills.
- GST return filing. Marg offers GST returns in Excel, CSV and JSON, plus GSTR-2A/2B reconciliation.[2][4]
- TDS on purchase of goods (Section 194Q). Marg's support pages document how to set this up.[7] SteelERP does not handle TDS.
- Upfront cost. Marg's price list shows a Nano edition at ₹5,550 and Basic, Silver and Gold editions at ₹10,300, ₹13,900 and ₹26,000, plus 18% GST and a yearly renewal charge.[2] On software cost alone, that is lower than a SteelERP subscription.
- Local support network, mobile apps and bank integrations. Marg lists six business apps and banking integrations with ICICI, Axis, SBI, J&K Bank and IndusInd.[1]
What SteelERP is built around
SteelERP starts from the way a steel order actually moves through a trading yard:
- Weight-based trading. Every item carries an ordered weight and an actual loaded weight, and billing uses the actual weight. Tonnage conversions are built in.
- Part-deliveries. An order becomes delivery sub-orders by kg, metre or piece. Each sub-order has its own loading, challan and delivery status.
- Inquiry to order. Inquiries convert into orders, so the customer's first ask is linked to what was finally dispatched.
- Purchase side. Purchase orders can have multiple purchase advices, and goods are received against each advice.
- Yard stock and coils. Stock is held across multiple warehouses, with each user scoped to their own yards. A coil-level ledger records allocation and movement history, and low-stock reporting sits alongside it.
- Trading analytics. There are 50+ reports, including a GST summary, TCS and discounts. Demand forecasts, anomaly detection and reorder suggestions are advisory only. A weekly PDF report goes out by email.
- Connections. Tally Prime integration runs both ways: Tally pulls printed challans through an authenticated API, and SteelERP pushes to a webhook you provide. Challan PDFs go out through WhatsApp Business on your own account. A customer portal and an AI advisor that runs on your own Anthropic key are optional.
- Control. Role-based access with yard scoping, an optional IP allow-list for non-admin users, and an audit log. Each customer gets a separate database, hosted on AWS Mumbai, with optional daily S3 backups. The interface is available in English and Hindi.
For multi-unit selling, Marg's public documentation covers multi-unit billing and conversion entries. Its examples are strips and tablets of medicine, and 100 kg of sugar repacked into 1, 2 and 5 kg packs.[8][11] We did not find steel-specific weight-dispatch workflows in Marg's public material. That does not mean Marg cannot be set up for them, so ask Marg to demo your own scenario.

Is SteelERP a replacement for Marg ERP?
Not for accounting or GST compliance. Marg ERP is GST billing, accounting and inventory software with e-invoicing and e-way bill support. SteelERP does not keep a full accounting ledger and does not generate e-invoices or e-way bills. It runs the steel operations side: inquiries, orders, weight-based dispatch, part-deliveries, challans, purchase advices, yard stock and the coil ledger.
Can I use SteelERP and Marg ERP together?
You can run them side by side, with SteelERP for dispatch and stock operations and your accounting package for books and GST filings. There is no ready-made SteelERP to Marg ERP connector today. SteelERP's built-in accounting integration is two-way Tally Prime, and it can also push data to a webhook you provide.
Does SteelERP generate e-invoices or e-way bills?
No. SteelERP calculates CGST, SGST or IGST on each order line with the HSN code and gives you a GST summary report, but it does not generate e-invoice IRNs or e-way bills. Marg ERP states on its website that it supports both.
How does pricing compare?
SteelERP is a monthly subscription: Starter is ₹10,000 per month for 10 users and 1 stockyard, and Growth and Enterprise are on a custom quote.
